Once again fireworks and lights will bring the skies above Kenilworth to life as Kenilworth Round Table celebrate Guy Fawkes Night on Saturday November 5th with their 24th annual bonfire and fireworks extravaganza.

Organised by Kenilworth Round Table, all profits from the event will go to local charities and community causes.

This year’s event is ticket only entry. Advance tickets cost £7 for adults and £3 for kids, under 3’s go free. To guarantee admission please buy your tickets early as numbers are limited and tickets they will only be sold on the gate if remaining and at the higher price of £10 for adults and £5 for kids.

Tickets are on sale now at www.kenilworthroundtable.com and from early October from the following Kenilworth outlets; Waitrose in Kenilworth, Kenilworth Castle Shop, Boothroyd & Co, Bakers Dozen, The Almanack and Becks Butchers, plus all CV postcoded branches of The Coventry Building Society.

Parking & Travel Information

Parking at Kenilworth Castle is restricted to disabled badge holders only, and spaces are limited so arrive early.

Public parking in Kenilworth is available in Abbey End, Square West and Abbey Fields car parks. In addition Priorsfield School will be opening their car park on Clinton Lane to raise funds for the school.

The public car parks are likely to fill up very early, so get there early (gates open at 5:30pm).

The roads around Kenilworth will obviously be very busy on the night, in particular the A452 Leamington Road from the A46. Also the B4103 Castle Road will be closed from 4pm outside the Castle. Diversions will be in place, but expect significant delays.

As an alternative to driving, regular public bus services run from Coventry, Leamington Spa, or Warwick. Details of bus timetables can be found on the Warwickshire County Council website. The closest stop for the Castle on most routes is the Kenilworth Clock.

“Tim the Fish”’s Recipe of the Month

Grilled Mackerel Fillets with Lemon Chilli Relish

Take some of Tim’s fresh mackerel and serve it up with a tangy lemon relish – Great!
Ingredients
(Serves 4)
4 mackerel, filleted
A little olive or sunflower oil
Salt and pepper

For the relish
2 lemons
4 tbsp caster sugar
1 tsp coriander seeds, coarsely crushed
½ tbsp black mustard seeds
1 red chilli, deseeded and thinly sliced
2 plum tomatoes, deseeded and finely diced

Method
First you’ve got to make the relish. Slice the lemons very thinly with a sharp knife, discarding the ends. Save all the juice that is squeezed out as you cut (or as much as you can).

Lay the lemon slices in a shallow dish in a single layer and pour over enough boiling water to just cover. Let it stand for 3 minutes, then drain. Repeat with a new lot of boiling water, leave to stand for another 3 minutes, then drain again. Cut the lemon slices into quarters.
Put the sugar into a saucepan with 6 tablespoons of water. Stir over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved. Add the lemon quarters, the saved lemon juice, the spices and the chilli. Simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the liquid is very syrupy and the lemon rind is translucent and tender.

Take off the heat and stir in the tomato. Leave to cool.

Preheat the grill thoroughly. Cover the grill rack with a sheet of silver foil (so that the mackerel won’t stick to the bars). Brush the foil with a little oil. Season the cut sides of the fillets with salt and pepper. Lay them, cut-sides down, skin upwards on the foil, and brush the skins lightly with oil.

Grill close until the skin has browned nicely. Turn over the fish. The heat of the grill will probably have been enough to cook the fillets right through already, but if they look a touch raw, grill for another minute or two, cut-sides up.

As soon as the fillets are cooked, serve with the relish.
